Being
successful in school comes with a lot of patience and motivation. Unfortunately
there are so many distractions that can come your way, but you need to be
determined and focused. If you want to become a successful student, then you
have to start learning how to say no to these distractions. It may be hard and
tiring during the first year in school, but the hard work always pays off at
the end. When you graduate you want to graduate with honours and good grade,
you want to also be remembered as a diligent school worker. For you to achieve
all these, you need to put the following things in mind.
1.
Make good
use of your time. Time waits for no one, as the saying goes. So, for you to make good use
of your time then you need to have a schedule. Since you have an agenda or
school time-table, then you need to schedule your time base on this. Before you
go to bed every night, check through your time-table to know the number of
courses you are to attend the following day, your time schedule will surely be
based on this. Plan in advance what you need to do each day and make sure you
keep to time on each plan. Use your agenda to stay organized
and follow through with your plans. Also, use your agenda to set time limits.
If you are spending much time on a thing and you know you have more important
things to do, stop, put it aside, move on to other things. Come back to it
later. Remember, time waits for no one.
2.
Socialized,
hang out with smart friends. You cannot work all 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday without having
to socialize and hang out. Don’t be a nerd, balance is the key. School is
important, so also is good times. Participate in activities that will develop
your mental skills. School is your number one priority, nonetheless, it’s
important to have fun and lots of extra-curricular activities. As you are doing
this, hang out with smart friends. If you're hanging with people who don't
support your desire to be successful, no doubt, they will surely drag you down.
3.
Figure out
your best time to study. You cannot be successful in school without having a personal time to
study. What you gain in lectures can never be enough for you to get A’s, so you
need to have a personal time for study. Do not wait until exam time-table is
out before you start reading. What you read consistently will surely stay in
your long time memory. As you follow your personal reading time, do not focus
on a single or some selected courses, either because you like them or they
interest you, rather cover all your courses one after the other. Most
importantly, know the best time for you to read and assimilate. Some people
enjoy reading at night, because they stay more focus by then, some prefer early
morning, when they just wake up with fresh brain, while some enjoy reading
during the day. Either way, know you self and the best time for you to enjoy
reading. Whichever way, do not deprive yourself a better sleep. Getting enough
sleep will always keep you in good shape.
4.
Don’t procrastinate. Procrastination will
only pill-up your home-works or assignments and make school difficult for you
to enjoy. Do things immediately and at ones. When you are working on two or
more assignment and one is difficult for you, instead of procrastinating, move
the other ones and finish up. With this you will always get things done before
the due date.
5.
Ask when you
don’t understand. Nobody is an ocean of knowledge, so you can’t know everything. If
you knew everything about the topic you're studying, you wouldn't be there, and
that’s why you are in school to
learn. Ask your questions, that is what best students do. Don’t care if your
mate mock you, most times they benefit from questions they never ask. “It’s far
more important to know how to ask the right questions than to know the right
answers” (Tony Wagner in his book The Global Achievement Gap).
6.
Have a goal
and never give up. People have
different reason for going to school, some are there to get that degree they've
dreamed of for years. For some, to get a promotion at work. Some people just
want to learn something they've always found fascinating. For some students,
because their dad always wanted them to study. So ask yourself, why am I in
School? Knowing this will help you to set your goals and work towards achieving
them. It’s better to write down your goals in your diary to see it often. People
who write down their goals in a specific way achieve more of them than people
who let their goals float around just in their heads. Set a target for yourself (Second class upper
or …..). At times, it may be difficult to achieve a goal, but never give up if
you really want to be successful in school. By the time you work hard and
achieve them you will be proud of yourself, and likewise your friends too.
